Permissions on the mail database are given to groups, as opposed to directly to individual users. Individual user accounts are granted permissions through their group membership. Both users and groups entered in Manitou-Mail are mapped to PostgreSQL roles. Database roles representing users are members or other database roles representing groups.

The actions controlled by the permission system are:

Read messages: the minimum permission.
Modify messages: changing the status of messages.
Trash messages: moving messages to the trashcan.
Delete messages: physically deleting messages.
Write new messages: use Message->New to compose.
Define tags and filters.
